A Senior Professor of Dairy Science & Food Technology, Prof. Dinesh Chandra Rai had been the Founding Head of Department of Dairy Science & Food Technology, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. He has credit to start B.Tech. and M.Tech. programs in two disciplines i.e. Dairy Technology and Food Technology in the newly created department. He also headed the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying for two tenures in Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He was also the Vice-President of the University Sports Board (USB), BHU for two tenures.

After doing his B.Sc. (Agriculture) degree from Gorakhpur University (1984), Prof. Rai did his M.Sc. (Dairy Science) from BHU (1986) as Gold Medallist. He completed his Ph.D. in Dairy Technology from BHU (1992). He has got 30 years of rich experience in teaching and research. With 177 research/technical papers published in National and International journals, 3 Edited Books, 5 Co-authored books/manuals, 32 chapters in edited books, 14 technical articles in Hindi, Prof. Rai has so far supervised 25 Ph.D. and 52 M.Sc. students.

Prof. Rai is Fellow of Indian Dairy Association, 2023: National Academy of Dairy Science (India), 2019; U.P. Academy of Agricultural Sciences (UPAAS), 2019; Bioved Research Society (FBRS) 2014; Society of Applied Biotechnology (FSAB), 2012; and Society of Environmental Sciences, India (FSESc), 2009. Prof. Rai is the recipient of SAB Award of Excellence in Food Biotechnology, 2012. He had also been awarded with ICAR Best Teacher Award, 2012-13 and is the Editor of four referred Journals.

As Commonwealth Academic Fellow at University of Reading, UK (2009-2010) Prof. Rai has worked under the world’s prestigious Commonwealth Academic Fellowship program of Commonwealth commission of UK. In the last 25 years, Prof Rai visited 20 countries of five continents on official invitation. He visited Cornell University and Tuskegee University of United States as a Visiting Professor under AIP programme of USAID in 2011 to work jointly for developing novel approaches for instruction in emerging areas of Animal and Dairy Sciences. The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (India) deputed him for Training on Leadership for Academicians Programme (LEAP) at Ohio State University (USA) in 2019.

He was an Executive Council Member of Mahatma Gandhi Antarrastriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya (Central University) at Wardha, Maharashtra. Prof Rai is Visitor’s Nominee for Selection Committees in Central University of Karnataka, Central University of Jharkhand and Central University of Punjab.

He was a Member of Monitoring Committee for CSIR Mission Project – FOCUS (Food and Consumer Safety Solution), as an Expert & Collaborative partner of Safer and Sustainable Packaging group (SPG) of FSSAI (FSSAI-SPG).

Prof. Rai was the Founder Chairman of the IDA (Eastern UP Local Chapter) from 2015-2023 and Founder Convener of Eastern Region Chapter of National Academy of Dairy Science (India).
