The University Department of Ancient Indian History Culture and Archaeology was established in 1965 at Ram Dayalu Singh College, Muzaffarpur, following the approval of the Sub-Committee of the Bihar State University Commission, Patna, Bihar. The Sub-Committee had approved the appointment of one teacher to commence Undergraduate Honours and Pass courses from the current session of 1965. The Senate of the University, on 25.09.2003, approved the commencement of Postgraduate courses from the current session of 2003.
The founder Head of the Department was Prof. Nigamanand Kunwar, he was a symbol of the student-teacher relationship. He sacrificed his own precious and prestigious life and was shot dead by police while trying to save students during a protest in the campus, on 10th December 1966. We take pride in the legacy of the distinguished Heads of the Department; Prof. Radhe Shyam Sharma (1967-2003), Prof. Aparna Kumari (2003-2014), Prof. Sanjay Kumar Suman (2014-2023), and Prof. Kahkashan (2023-2024). Their commitment to excellence has inspired students to make meaningful contributions to history and humanity.
The department aims to educate undergraduate and postgraduate students in Ancient Indian History and Culture through an objective and scientifically-driven methodology. It fosters critical inquiry and employs an interdisciplinary approach to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the subject. The main focus areas include epigraphy, numismatics, pottery, museology, iconography, arts & architecture, religion and philosophy. We have incorporated diverse courses aimed at enhancing human values and abilities including Swachch Bharat Abhiyan activities, Environmental sustainability, Yogic sciences, Gender sensitization, and Human rights.
The department has been instrumental in organizing study tours to places of archaeological and historical importance as a part of the curriculum. Several research papers have been published by the faculties in UGC-indexed national and international journals. The department is committed to broadening the scope of knowledge in Ancient Indian History and tradition.
