University Department of Commerce at Post – Graduate level was at first established in 1972-73 at R.D.S. College, Muzaffarpur Campus. Further, since, 1983-85 University Department of Commerce had been shifted to its present building in the University Campus. This Department was adorned by the dynamic educationist Late Prof. Dr. G.D. Katiyar, Late Dr. R. Sahay, Dr. K. Jha, Late Dr. D.K. Sinha, Dr. Ram Sagar Singh, Dr. Amod Prasad, Dr. P.N. Gupta, Dr. Shivji Singh, Dr. Ramchandra Singh, Dr. Raghunandan Pd. Singh, Dr. R.K. Srivastava and Dr. Premanand as head till 24 January 2022. Now it is being headed by Prof. (Dr.) Syed Alay Mujtaba since 25 January, 2022.

                     The eminent professors had served the department in the past such as Mr. Yogendra Pd., Dr. B.P. Sharma, Mr. D.P. Srivastava, Dr. N.K. Singh, Dr. L.K. Shukla, Dr. C.K.L. Das, Dr. A.K. Jha, Dr. L.P. Jaiswal and so on. Since 11.11.2011 in University Department of Commerce M.B.A. Course had been commenced. This course was approved by the academic council, Syndicate and Senate. Professor and Head Dr. Syed Alay Mujtaba has achieved prestigious CMA, best professor of commerce award for the year 2022-2023 by Commerce and Management Association Patna. Dr. Vinod Baitha, Assistant Professor has achieved best teacher award by Forum for Interdisciplinary Research Methods on 5^th September, 2021.
