University Department of Maithili

The history of Department of Maithili is 45 years old. Post Graduate Department, Maithili was stated from the session 1979-81, after the bifurcation of Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga from Bihar University (Old name of BRABU, Muz.) in the year 1972, classes of P.G. Dept. of Maithili, had been started in the C.M. College, Darbhanga of LNMU. Students admitted in Bihar University and classes have been held at C.M. College. Bachelor course in Maithili was approved at only L.S. College, Muzaffarpur and only one teacher, Dr. Devendra Jha was their. Bachelor degree has given by the University but classes in P.G. were not approved properly. So the students were admitted in Bihar University and facilities of teaching were in Lalit Narayan Mithila University. The Government was approved P.G. classes in Bihar University in the year 1978 and University Grants Commission has been given the funds for the establishment of Department of Maithili in 7^th plan to the Bihar University. The space for the Dept. of Maithili was approved in the Language block of the University. Dr. Devendra Jha of the HOD, Department of Maithili, was initiated the demand for P.G. course in Maithili, because the students were suffering in that days. After the approval of opening the course of P.G and provided the space for the department, by the University, Dr. D. Jha was taken the classes of Maithili in Language Block of the University, very sincerely and dedicatedly. Classes have been started from the session 1979-1981 and Dr. Devendra Jha was transferred to the Department in Maithili, as Head, on 05.09.1983. The funds given to the department for Library and other facilities by the University after the sanctioning of UGC 7^th plan. The students were very satisfied for the new setup of the Department. Dr. Vinod Mishra and Dr. Girija Kishore Jha were the helping hands for the classes and mentorship of the students. They had taken additional classes after the work of L.S. College. They came properly, mentioned on class schedule of P.G. department and the Department was established properly. Other activities of the department, like, seminars, workshops, Maithili Sahitya Parishad etc were run properly. A seminar sponsored by Sahitya Academy was also organised by him. One Refresher course of Maithili, funded and sponsored by Academic Staff College, BU, Muz, was also organized in his tenure. Prof. (Dr.) Devendra Jha was superannuated on 31.05. 2003. After that Dr. Vinod Mishra was joined as Head, Dept. of Maithili on 01.02 2006 after the gap of 2 year 9 manths. But very sorry to say he was died in his working period on 19.10.2006. After his sad demise, after the gap of some days Dr. Girija Kishore Jha was joined as Head, Dept. of Maithili on 27^th Oct. 2026. Department were run properly and smoothly, because some teachers from affiliated colleges of the University, like Dr. Yadunath Lal Das, Dr. Shailendra Kumar Chaudhary, Dr. Chandrabir Lal Das, were the helping hands of the Department to engage the classes and other works. Dr. Girija Kishore Jha was superannuated on 30^th June 2009. Dr. Kamala Chaudhary was joined as Head of the Department, on 01.07.2009, transferred from MDDM College, Muzaffarpur. There were many departmental seminars, symposium, workshops and and a National seminar were held in her period. A National seminar sponsored by Sahitya Academy was held on 15-16 Dec, 2010 on Birth century of Aarsi Prasah Singh. One Departmental Journal, named ‘TIRHUT’ was published in the year 2012 by Maithili Sahitya Parishad of the Dept. of Maithili by her effort. Chief Editor was Dr. Kamala Chaudhary, and Dr. Madan Mishra, from Nitishwar Singh College, Dr. Rajkumar Jha from Rameshwar Singh College and Dr. Indudhar Jha from L.N.T. College, were the member of editorial Board. The students named Radha Rani and Ram Naresh Rai were completed JRF from NET Exam and enrolled as research scholar in the Department. Now Dr. Radha Rani is an Assistant Professor (Guest), in Nitishwar Mahavidylay and Dr. Ram Naresh Rai is permanent assistant Professor in Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga from the year 2016.   

After the tenure of Dr. Kamala Chaudhary Dr. Amarnath Jha was Joined in the Dept. as HOD in three year rotational headship on 1^st July 2012. He was transferred from L.N.T. College, Muzaffarpur. One Refresher course was organized by him in the Department of Maithili. The teaching and learning was gradually upgraded due to strength of teachers. At that time one student Nantun Paswan was completed the JRF, from NET Exam and enrolled as Reacher scholar in the Dept. Now he also joined as assistant professor, in B.N. Mandal University, Madhepura in the year 2017. After his successful three year tenure Dr. Rajan Kumar Singh was joined as Head, on 01.07.2015. Accreditation by the NAAC was held during his tenure. Dr. Indudhar Jha from L.N.T College was presented the Departmental PPT in front of NAAC peer team. They were very much satisfied from the teaching and learning status and other developments of the Department. Dr. Kamala Chaudhary and Dr. Amarnath Jha were the supporting hands for teaching and learning of the department. But Dr. Kamala Chaudhary and Dr. Amarnath Jha were superannuated on 31th May. 2018 and 28^th Feb. 2019 respectively. Dr. Raj Kumar Jha was joined as head on 6^th July 2018. The admission of students in the department of Maithili was gradually down due to less job opportunity and lacking of teaching strength. In the mean time the guest faculties were appointed in different P.G. departments and Colleges in the University. Dr. Ratnakrishna Jha of was joined as Guest Assistant Professor, on 29.09.2020. Covid-19 was also effected the teaching and learning system in this period. At the time of Dr. Raj Kumar Jha one Refresher course was held in the UGC HRD Centre, of BRABU, Muz. under the Co-ordinatorhip of Dr. Indudhar Jha and Dr. Rajan Kumar Singh.

Dr. Indudhar Jha  was joined as head on 19^th July, 2021. After that the teaching and learning got back on track. Strength of students are gradually exceeded. One JRF, Radha Raman Jha has enrolled as research scholar for Ph.D course under the guidance of Dr. Indudhar Jha from 2021. Another research scholar named Rajeev Kumar was also enrolled under his guidance. One National Seminar sponsored by Sahitya Academy was organized by Dr. Indudhar Jha on 26-27 Feb. 2022. Several functions like students fresher’s day, farewell ceremony of students, Teachers day celebration, book release ceremonies, Felicitation ceremony for the winners of East Zone Youth Festival, Practice session for the University Cultural Team for National Youth Festival-2022-23, Practice session of East Zone Youth festival-2023-24, and National Youth Festival 2023-24 has been organized in the Department of Maithili. One workshop on Library work was organized for the students of Ph.D coursework from 28 May 2024 to 3 June 2024.
