University Department of English

       The Department of English was planted as an educational sapling at Langat Singh College, Muzaffarpur, long before the University of Bihar was established in 1952. It has its own glorious record of producing eminent teachers, educationists, administrators and politicians whose contribution brought fame to the department at national and international levels. It has also the proud privilege of having Prof. Lal Gopal Chakravorty, Dr. Rajendra Prasad (the first President of India), Prof. Mahendra Pratap, Prof. Fazlur Rahman, Dr. Damodar Thakur (ex-DPI Bihar) and Prof. K.C. Srivastava as its faculty members.

       Keeping in mind the need for larger space the University Department of English was bifurcated in 1979 from Langat Singh College, Muzaffarpur, and was shifted in a new building known as Language Block in the premises of B.R.A. Bihar University, Muzaffarpur. First and foremost under the Headship of Dr. K. N. Sinha the department witnessed remarkable growth and development. It was also enriched by a galaxy of eminent teachers some of whom like Dr. K. R. Chatterjee, Dr. V.N. Sharma, Dr. Basudeo Sharma, Dr. B.N. Jha, Dr. A.K. Jha, Dr. R.R.P. Sinha, Dr. Prema Jha, Dr. K.S. Jha, Dr. G. K. Thakur, Dr. Pramila Singh, Dr. R.B. Singh, Dr. D. Prasad, Dr. S.K. Paul also worked as the Heads of the Department and contributed immensely towards academic excellence and scholarly pursuits. Other faculty members like Dr. Umeshwar Prasad, Dr. H.C. Lal, Dr. Mohan Jha, Dr. U.K. Dutta, Dr. Umashankar Prasad Sinha, Prof. Parvati Singh, Dr. A.K. Srivastava, were also known for their erudition and academic commitment. The faculty members of the next generation, such as Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Dr. Kanupriya, Dr. Madhushalini (Ex-Head), Dr. Jyoti Narain Singh, Dr. Madhur Kumar, Dr. Vinamrata, Dr. Upendra Gami, Dr. Saumya Sarkar, have also been contributing to the department with their expertise and academic pursuits.

       Prof. Binay Shanker Roy, the present Head of the Department, continues to strive for excellence, fostering the best of Indian values and culture of intellectual curiosity, and inspiring the new generation of students and scholars to pursue their academic passion with vigour and determination. In spite of few constraints the Department is still trying its best to maintain academic excellence by organising seminars, conferences, workshops, group discussions, elocutions etc. to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the students, research scholars and the society at large.
