The University Department of History, established in the year 1954, is one of the oldest departments of B.R. Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur. Eminent historians like Prof. J. Sen, Prof. H.R. Ghoshal and Prof. Sitaram Singh have been associated with it. The Department, which orgainsed prestigious Indian History Congress in 1972, was highest graded among the University Departments by NAAC in 2015.
The Department aims at teaching history objectively with an interdisciplinary approach of pedagogy at its post-graduate (PG) and research programme (Ph.D.). Its main thrust areas include history of ideas, science and technology, gender studies, national movement, socio-economic and cultural history, micro-narratives of Bihar and global historiography. Subsequently, it offers various foundation and ability enhancement courses on skill development, archival and museum studies, human values, environment and sustainability. Through the regular publication of Amrapali journal and the organization of international and national seminars, webinars, memorial lectures, workshops, historical tour and other academic activities under the aegis of Bihar Itihaas Parishad, Indian Council of Historical Research, Prakrit Jain Sansthan, K.P. Jaiswal Research Institute and Ramchandra Shahi Museum, the department has been actively engaged in intellectual discourse. The faculties have been publishing in SCOPUS, Web of Science and UGC indexed journals and compiled research projects funded by the University Grant Commission, Indian Council of Social Science Research and other bodies.
Under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dinesh Chandra Rai, the faculties, research scholars and students of the University Department of History are determined to contribute in widening the horizon of tradition of knowledge.
