• Brief History of the Department

The University Department of Zoology was established in the year 1958 under the stewardship of Prof. K.C.Bose and it was followed by Prof. S.Kanji Lal for a brief period. Thereafter, Dr. R.B.Sharma, took over the charge as the Head of Department. Later on Prof. U.S.Srivastava became Head of the Department and served till 1969. Dr. R.B.Sharma again briefly headed the Department.  Till then the Department had been running at L.S.College, Muzaffarpur. It was the year 1975 when the Department shifted to the present building and in the next year   Dr. B.R.Singh was appointed as Professor and Head of the Department.

                         The Department has been imparting teaching in M.Sc. Zoology with semester system. The academic and research tradition of the Department is also being carried out with zeal and vigor presently by Prof Shiva Nand Singh as Head of the Department. He has the distinction of supervising research work of many Studentss. Teaching and research is being carried out in the field of Cytology, Entomology, Limnology, Nematology, Aquaculture, Ethology, and Environmental Science by Dr. Shiva Nand Singh, Dr. Faiyaz Ahmad and Dr. B.K.P. Singh. In addition to this at present four guest teachers are working in the Department. The name of the Assistant Professors (guest faculty) are Dr. Anita Kumari, Dr. Mamta Kumari, Dr. Fazla Wahid and Mr. Tarun Kumar.

A self-financed course in M.Sc. Fish and Fisheries has also been started from the session 2009-10. The Fish and Fisheries Course is being taught by many of our Departmental colleagues and also by inviting able resource persons from different places. Due to post-course employment opportunities there is great rush of (applicants) students for this course. Students are admitted by screening through and on entrance test and the selected once are subjected to theoretical as well as practical training. Many of the students after passing out have got jobs in both govt. as well as private sectors

The University Department of Zoology has the distinction of completing a number of minor and major research projects with appreciations from different funding agencies such as, UGC, ICAR ICMR, PL-480 etc. At present at least dozens of Studentss of this Department have completed NET/JRF & GATE. A students Dr. Tanuja of Jamia Milia University, New Delhi, is doing her D.Sc. work under the supervision of the present HOD Prof. Shiva Nand Singh. There is a long list of teachers & alumni who had earned pride to the Department as distinguished scientists, academicians and administrators at their organizations & a few out of which to be named are
